Bringing partners together to collaborate, innovate and find solutions to child poverty and unfairness in child health.

Acting now for our youngest residents and Camden’s next generations.

In Camden we are committed to tackling the biggest issues that face our communities with the resource and ideas of our whole borough. This is the commitment of our Missions work and the ambition of We Make Camden.

To understand the differences and unfairness in children’s health in Camden, we commissioned the UCL Institute of Health Equity (IHE) to look at our existing data. They wrote an independent report which sets out recommendations for Camden and our partners to reduce child poverty and improve the health of children born into the most challenging circumstances in our borough.

The report showed that despite decades of council investment, Camden is one of the most unequal places to live in England.

Services across the Council, in collaboration with partners, community groups and residents, play a role every day in tackling child health inequity, and we have a lot to be proud of. But child poverty is increasing in Camden and across London.

The factors contributing to child poverty are complex – and bold, collective action is needed to tackle them. Led by the Raise Camden Taskforce, which is co-chaired by the Leader of Camden Council and Professor Sir Michael Marmot, Raise Camden brings together cross-sector partners from in and out of the borough to reduce child poverty and the gap in healthy life expectancy in Camden.

With our partners, we are addressing the causes of child health inequity through a programme of sustainable, evidence-based test and learn projects. Our ambition is to reduce child health inequity in Camden from pregnancy to when a young person turns 25 – we want to see children growing up in the most deprived 40% of Camden households as happy, healthy and hopeful as children in the least deprived 40%.

We can’t do it alone

Change is needed now to alter the course for our children and young people, and we can’t act alone. We are looking to partner with people and organisations in and outside of Camden to achieve the ambitions of Raise Camden.

If you’d like to be involved with our work, we would love to hear from you.

Evidence Generation and Systems Influence
  • We collaborate with cross-sector partners to learn, innovate, deliver and evaluate projects to address poverty and unfairness in children’s health – to give every child in Camden the best start in life.
  • The direction of our work is set by the Raise Camden Taskforce, made up of cross sector experts and experts by experience. It is co-chaired by Councillor Sagal Abdi-Wali, Leader of Camden Council and Professor Sir Michael Marmot.
  • Our projects are divided into three innovation hubs that address the causes of inequity:
    1. Child poverty and family support
    2. Estates and temporary accommodation
    3. Intergenerational mental health.

Our enabling workstreams support and inform the innovation hub work:

  • Children and Young People’s Voice and Influence – ensuring that what matters to Camden’s children and young people is central to our work and the way we do things
  • Partnerships – working together across organisations and sectors helps us to innovate and achieve more
  • Data – developing improved data systems and processes means that our work is well informed, evaluated and targeted to our families who need our support the most
  • Evidence Generation & System Change – sharing our work and what we have learned helps to drive system change in and outside of Camden.
